2. Plants and light: state of scientific knowledge
In order to examine the effects of artificial lighting on trees in greater depth, this chapter provides a bibliographical review of scientific knowledge on the relationship between plants and light. As stated in the introduction, priority will be given to woody plants (trees and shrubs), but results on herbaceous plants and algae will also be discussed to give an overview. To complete this section, readers can also consult the bibliographical synthesis by Bennie et al. (2016) on the interactions between night-time lighting and wild plants.
