CO2 Capture Utilization and Storage - From molecular chemistry to life cycle

This article presents an approach to CCS that integrates chemical, technological, and economic considerations, with a particular focus on post-combustion capture using amine absorption—a technology that is now mature and implemented on an industrial scale. From an engineering perspective, several practical lessons emerge:

• Although costly, this post-combustion capture technology remains essential for fossil fuel power plants because it can be retrofitted without altering combustion conditions;

• Operating costs (OPEX) are largely driven by the regeneration of the absorbent (boiler heating), which influences the choice of solvents toward formulations with low viscosity, high cycle capacity, and excellent thermal and chemical stability;
