The classification threshold is the quantitative criterion associated with an item in the nomenclature of classified installations. It defines the applicable classification system, and therefore the regulatory constraints that will govern the commissioning and operation of the facility.

With a few exceptions (non-threshold headings), each heading is characterized by several quantitative thresholds to which different regimes are associated.

The classification principle is as follows: the higher the quantitative thresholds, the greater the risk to the environment and public safety, and the more stringent the associated regulations and constraints.
