Most needs are satisfied with emission inventories drawn up for an entire calendar year. The availability of a time series is generally necessary to assess trends and, in particular, to "measure" the impact of actions taken to protect the environment.

The development of atmospheric transport and physico-chemical transformation models requires the availability of information relating to much shorter time intervals, of the order of an hour, in order to study episodes generally lasting no more than a few days.
