The concept of “renaturation” remains poorly defined. No clear consensus has emerged regarding its definition. The definition adopted by lawmakers in the ZAN Act of July 2023 defines renaturation as “an action or operation to restore or improve the functionality of a soil, resulting in the transformation of an artificialized soil into a non-artificialized soil.” Here, only the “soil” aspect is taken into account, to the detriment of the ecosystem (see Box 1).
