Principles of operational waste management for an economic activity

According to a survey carried out by ADEME in 2010, 53% of companies are aware of the external cost of waste management by service providers or the public sector, and 42% keep track of it. However, nine out of ten companies are unaware of the "hidden cost" of their waste, associated with its internal production and management.

The study concludes that the true full cost of waste is up to 40 times the amount of a company's waste management bill alone (figure 11 ). These conclusions are still valid ten years on.
