Transporting dangerous goods: what are your obligations?

First and foremost, you need to know the regulations applicable to the transport of dangerous goods, in order to determine what your obligations are. You will need to identify your dangerous goods and classify them according to the nature of the danger they present.

The diversity of transport modes (road, rail, inland waterway, sea and air), as well as the nature of the goods transported and the dangers they present, have led to the introduction of strict regulations, based on UN recommendations. These recommendations, or "Orange Book", form the basis for all national and international regulations designed to ensure the safe transport and handling of dangerous goods. They set out a series of fundamental provisions (list of goods, definition of classes, provisions relating to packaging, marking and transport documents).
