Adding lime to organic waste is a simple stabilization technique, particularly suited to organic waste. The resulting residue is so dry, biologically stable and workable that it can be used for agricultural purposes. In some cases, the aim of stabilizing waste by liming is to achieve the limits set by regulations for landfill acceptance, i.e. a dryness of over 30%, a pH of over 6 and a limited TOC content.
Liming waste consists of mixing it with quicklime. During mixing, the lime reacts with the water contained in the waste (or added jointly), according to the following hydration reaction:
