Three essential factors control the fate of a substance in an ecosystem: distribution, persistence and transfer along the trophic chain.
3.1 Distribution
The distribution of a substance will depend on where it enters the ecosystem: airborne or aquatic. Substances can thus be confined to one compartment or redistributed according to their physico-chemical properties (more or less soluble, lipophilicity, Henry's law constant, vapor pressure, volatility...).
