1. Water resources

1.1 Hydrological context

With a surface area of 164,420 km2, Tunisia has rainwater resources estimated at 36 km3/year. Total water resources (blue water) are estimated at 4.85 km3/year, of which 2.7 km3/year is average runoff. The remainder, 2.15 km3/year, is underground runoff, from which withdrawals were estimated at 2 km3 in 2010, representing an exploitation rate of 93%. However, this national average conceals major regional disparities, and many aquifer systems are subject to severe overexploitation.

Surface water inflow is highly variable from year to year, with a minimum of 0.78 km3/year and a maximum of 11 km3/year; the max/min ratio ranges from 9 in the north to 180 in the south
