The amplitude of an elastic wave decreases as it propagates, the higher the frequency. However, this decrease is less marked if the medium in which it propagates is more ordered. Despite their anisotropy, crystals are therefore chosen as carriers for high-frequency waves (f > 500 MHz). Given the simplification brought about by symmetry in the expression of a crystal's response to physical stress, let's recall a few crystallographic notions.
A crystal can be broken down into a three-dimensional network of points, called nodes, and a pattern placed at each node.
Any node M is deduced from an origin node by a succession of elementary translations defined by three vectorsa, b etc :
