The principle of the CCUS chain is illustrated in figure 3. The CO2 is captured at the emission source of the emitting industrial site (thermal power plant fumes, refinery or steelworks fumes, sour gas on an oilfield...), it is compressed for transport, via a dedicated pipeline network or possibly by ship (pressurized liquid), then injected into a well feeding a geological storage site, a reservoir of sufficient permeability and size, capable of storing quantities of CO2 associated with several decades of injection (aquifers, depleted oil or gas reservoirs).
