Knowledge of urban soils and their quality is a recent phenomenon. Awareness of the health and environmental risks associated with artificial soils first led to the study of mining and industrial sites in the 1990s, with a focus on soil contamination (metallic and organic pollution), before more recently tackling urban soils.
