1. Soil organic carbon and its dynamics
Organic carbon enters the soil primarily in the form of plant
litter and root exudates. These plant-derived materials are biotransformed
and mineralized by soil organisms, mainly micro-organisms (bacteria
and fungi). Soil organic matter (the main functions of which are presented
in figure
1
) is
therefore mainly composed of living and dead biomass, decaying plant
litter, and substances of microbial origin.
