2. Applications Specific to Certain Industries

It is impossible to compile an exhaustive list of all the ways water can be used in a factory; at best, we can attempt to group them into the following main categories:

  • a single component (bottled water), an essential component (beverages, dialysis, injectable preparations), or a significant component (many food products) of the finished product;

  • an essential agent in the manufacturing process (examples: paper mills, textile and dyeing industries, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, etc.);

  • washing products and equipment (e.g., food and beverage industries), rinsing the finished product (e.g., electronics industry);

  • boiler feedwater and heat transfer;

  • transportation of materials or waste (e.g., slag in the steel industry,...
