1. The different particles

Table 1 lists the most important particles, those that best reflect the current state of matter. They can be grouped into two main families: bosons and fermions.

1.1 Bosons

Bosons are exchange particles: they reflect interactions between particles, and are also called "messengers".

  • The graviton is the messenger of the gravitational interaction; the photon is the messenger of the electromagnetic interaction. Since both interactions are infinite in scope, the mass of these bosons must be zero. Their lifetime is infinite.

  • The intermediate boson is the messenger of the weak nuclear interaction. Neutral (Z)...
