1.1 BLEVE definition
BLEVE is an acronym for Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion.
It refers to the phenomenon of violent vaporization resulting from the almost instantaneous venting of a pressurized liquid initially stored at a temperature significantly higher than its atmospheric boiling point. In accident situations, this venting is the result of a loss of containment in the storage tank.
