4.1 Objectives and benefits of the probabilistic approach

As we have already seen, the potential violence of a gas explosion in an industrial plant depends on numerous parameters. Some are fixed by the configuration studied (geometry, gas), but others can be much more random: position and direction of the leak, weather conditions, location of the ignition source, etc. In addition, the size of the accidental leak must itself be considered with a certain probability of occurrence.
