1. The problem of industrial sludge
Industrial or municipal sludge has waste status. As such, its disposal must comply with increasingly stringent regulations governing its regulatory classification, and its physico-chemical, organic and microbiological composition.
However, a waste sludge can become a product sludge if it successfully undergoes a certification procedure or meets a standard conferring this product status (as in the case of sludge compost, NFU 44-095).
1.1 Definition of industrial sludge
The term "industrial sludge" covers all liquid, pasty or solid waste leaving the production site. There are two types of sludge, depending on their origin (see figure 1):
