3. Redox treatments
These reactions are used to modify the state of certain metals (divalent iron, hexavalent chromium, etc.) or certain sulfur and cyanide compounds in order to :
or to render them insoluble and eliminate them by precipitation;
or transform them into still-soluble, but non-toxic compounds.
Physical oxidation (with air or oxygen) and chemical oxidation can be carried out using :
or gaseous oxidizers (chlorine or ozone, possibly combined with ultraviolet radiation);
or liquid oxidizing reagents (chlorine dioxide, sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, monopersulfuric acid (Caro acid), etc.).
