2. Mechanisms of marine corrosion
The main modes of corrosion are all liable to come into play.
The specific characteristics of seawater, however, easily lead to pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion, encouraged by
chloride ions, galvanic corrosion, encouraged by the increased
electrical conductivity, and biocorrosion, encouraged by biological
activity. Finally, marine corrosion occurs differently depending on
whether the metal is permanently submerged, alternating with dry periods,
only in contact with sea-spray, etc.
The behaviour of materials in respect of corrosion can vary considerably
according to their exposure conditions, and the different zones need
to be identified, as summarised in figure 2.
