For centuries, consumers paid little attention to the toxicity of the cosmetics they used. At XIXn the century, many doctors and pharmacists became alarmed by the toxic ingredients found in commercial products. Dr Monin, in particular, warned consumers about products whose claims on the packaging were above suspicion. At the beginning of the XXn the century, pharmacist René Cerbelaud enjoyed counter-typing commercial products and revealing their ingredients. Having fought tooth and nail against secret remedies, he then turned his attention to cosmetics, revealing the compositions of products then in vogue. Little by little, the notion of harmlessness began to be taken into account. In 1970, the Morhange talc affair triggered a veritable scandal. The death of infants from exposure to talc with excessive doses of hexachlorophene alerted public authorities to the need for cosmetics...
