5. Dietary fiber
The term "dietary fibers" comes from the English translation of "fibres alimentaires". This expression, in fairly recent use, covers a concept previously known as "intestinal ballast" or "carbohydrate indigestible". The latter two expressions had the advantage of clarifying the role and chemical nature of dietary fibers, whereas the fibrous aspect is far from being a reality for all the products concerned.
