1. The different types of catalytic reactors
Catalytic reactors can be classified into two sub-categories: fixed-bed or fixed-charge reactors, in which the catalyst charge remains "trapped" in the reactor, and moving-bed or circulating-bed reactors, in which the catalyst charge can circulate and be renewed.
The tubular fixed-bed reactor is the most widely used, because it is the easiest to implement technically. Several variants of this reactor are available and used, depending on the specific characteristics of the reaction system involved.
