Fluorine

Under normal conditions of temperature and pressure, fluorine is a pale yellow gas with a pungent odor. With atomic number Z = 9, it occupies the square next to neon in the periodic table, where it is the first of the halogens.

It was discovered just over a century ago by French chemist Henri Moissan, during the electrolysis of a solution of potassium fluoride in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.

The relative atomic mass of fluorine is 18.9984032 (IUPAC 1993).
