2.1.1 The need for cross-linking
Increasing the degree of cross-linking (percentage of DVB in the monomer, by mass) results in a harder, less elastic resin. More cross-linked resins are more resistant to oxidizing media, which tend to uncross-link the polymer. However, above 10-12% DVB, the structure becomes too rigid and compact. Activation becomes difficult, as access to the bead core is hampered by the density of the backbone.
