5. Extraction of multicomponent mixtures
Most separations and purifications in hydrometallurgy involve several extractable components. We will distinguish two cases according to their concentrations. A major component is one whose concentration is such that its presence modifies the equilibrium parameters of the other components. Otherwise, it is said to be minor.
When only one component is major, resolution is relatively straightforward.
First, the distribution of the major component among the plant's stages is determined using a classic Ponchon-Savarit (or MacCabe and Thiele) construction. Then, knowing the concentration of the major component in each stage, we can deduce that of each minor component separately if we have the necessary equilibrium...
