1. Principles of phase separation processes
All phase separation processes are based on the same thermodynamic principles. In all cases, the starting point is a thermodynamically stable solution, which is then subjected to demixing conditions such as temperature reduction or non-solvent intrusion.
The concept of phase inversion (or separation) to prepare membranes was introduced by Kesting in 1971 .
