1. Metal chlorination
Some metal chlorides are sought-after for their catalytic properties. These include aluminum chloride, ferric chloride and antimony chloride.
In general, chlorination is carried out directly, i.e. by applying chlorine gas to lump or liquid metal. This is the case with aluminum, whose melting is triggered by the exothermicity of the reaction.
