4.1 Concentration polarization
The extraction of minority compounds in contact with a pervaporation membrane can be penalized by the existence of a boundary layer in which the contents of preferentially transferred species are lowered, relative to the composition of the homogeneous liquid charge. This lowering of the local content, also known as concentration polarization, generally results in a decrease in material flow and, above all, in a reduction in the membrane's apparent selectivity.
