The term "catalysis" refers to a process in which a substance, called a "catalyst", accelerates a thermodynamically possible reaction, while being regenerated at the end of the cycle. A distinction is made between homogeneous catalysis, in which the catalyst, reactants and products form a single phase, and heterogeneous catalysis, which takes place at the interface between a solid catalyst and a fluid phase containing the reactants and products
