The crystal structures of representative alkali and alkaline-earth alanates are listed in Table 1. Although tetra-alanates crystallize in different structures, they share many common properties. As an example, the crystallographic structure of sodium alanate is shown in figure 1.
Tetra-alanates (Mn+(AlH4)n) consist of almost perfect tetrahedra of the [AlH4] complex– interconnected by M+ cations. The typical Al–H distance in the tetrahedron is around 1.62 Å. There is a single crystallographic site for the M+ cation.
