2.1 Physical and chemical properties of sodium carbonate

Sodium carbonate is a white, crystalline, odorless powder.

Molecular mass: 105.994.

Melting temperature: 851 ˚C (1,124 K).

Intrinsic density at 20 ˚C: 2,532 kg/m3.Mass heat capacity at 25 ˚C: 1.042 kJ · kg-1· K-1.

Enthalpy of fusion: 316.1 kJ/kg.

Enthalpy of formation at 25 ˚C: 10.47 × 103 kJ/kg.

Sodium carbonate is highly soluble in water (maximum solubility: 332.1 g of Na2CO3 per kilogram of solution at 35.37 ˚C or 448 g per liter of solution).

Table 1 shows some characteristic values for the solubility of sodium carbonate in water.
