4. Cathodes
Various materials have been considered for use as cathode materials. These include :
chromates ;
oxides ;
sulfides.
Currently, FeS2 pyrite is the most widely used material, as it combines the main characteristics required. On the other hand, pyrite can be extracted from ores at a reasonable cost, unlike CoS2, which has to be synthesized.
4.1 Conductive properties of pyrite
Pyrite possesses p- or n-type semiconducting properties, depending on the ore's geographical origin. Its electronic conductivity ranges from 0.3 to several hundred siemens per centimeter
