1. Viscosity definitions and units

  • Dynamic or shear viscosity is based on fluid mechanics concepts.

    Consider two parallel horizontal plates (figure 1 ), which bound a fluid layer of thickness h. If the lower plate is stationary and the upper plate of area A moves parallel to this surface at a velocity v x , a force F per unit area A must be applied to maintain the displacement such that :
