Alternative protocols enable a secure link to be established over longer distances, compared with an attenuated coherent source. Nevertheless, at longer distances, an efficient single-photon source will enable higher throughput. More importantly, in the context of a quantum network with relay or quantum repeater implementation, a single-photon source is essential to ensure sufficiently high protocol fidelity .
The realization of electrically-pumped single-photon sources, emitting at 1.3 µm or 1.55 µm and with a cadence in the GHz range, still remains a challenge. Studies are being carried out on several of these points, but at present there is no single device that meets all of them.
