6. Initiation
The sensitivity of an energetic material – i.e. its propensity to decompose under the effect of external stress, whether voluntary or not – is obviously an extremely important aspect.
Different sensitivity criteria are defined according to the type of stress considered (impact, shock, friction, temperature rise, etc.).
ExampleA common device for measuring the sensitivity of an explosive to impact is to drop a calibrated mass onto a sample of the material. The higher the mass is dropped, the greater the probability of initiation. The drop height for which decomposition is observed with a probability of 50% is denoted h50 .
