6. Contribution of X-ray absorption spectroscopy
Unlike diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy provides information on the local order around a target atom. This technique involves measuring the absorption coefficient of the material near an absorption threshold of the target atom, as a function of the energy of the incident radiation. An increase in the absorption coefficient is expected for energies above the absorption threshold value, and the evolution should give a sharp edge as shown in figure
