The concept of "photon gaps" or photonic bandgap materials arose from physicists' long-standing desire for total control over light and electromagnetic waves.
What do we mean by "total control" of light?
Of course, according to common sense, it's all about directing and channelling light where and how you want it, but it's also, and above all, about being able to control the emission of light in the ultimate way, photon by photon, and being able to detect it under the same conditions.
One might think that laser emission, known for its directionality and monochromatic nature, would meet the criteria for ultimate emission, but this would be to forget...
