8. Physics of phenomena
In pyrotechnics, three decomposition regimes are distinguished, depending on the speed at which the phenomenon propagates. The slowest is combustion, which entails a risk of injury to the operator. When the phenomenon accelerates, we are in the presence of deflagration, with effects that become lethal. Finally, an even faster phenomenon is possible: detonation, associated with the most significant effects.
These definitions differ from those given by combustionists, for whom there are only two regimes, deflagration and detonation, combustion being a slow deflagration.
