Knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of electrolyte solutions is essential for sizing unit operations such as absorption and desorption columns for CO
2
capture, crystallizers or electrochemical systems. There are a huge number of models for these systems, which can be differentiated into two categories: activity coefficient models and equations of state. Each type of approach has its advantages and disadvantages, the trade-off being between the complexity of the mathematical expressions, the number of parameters fitted and the ability to handle a wide variety of mixtures with the same model.
