2. Estimating the thermophysical properties of materials
Characterizing a material can mean determining one or more of its properties. In thermophysical characterization, the properties generally studied are thermal diffusivity and/or effusivity. These depend on the thermal conductivity and heat capacity by volume of the material in question. The difficulty of such characterization lies in the fact that these physical quantities are not directly measurable.
