Gabriel PLASSAT is an energy and forecasting engineer at ADEME (Agence de l'Environnement et de la Maîtrise de l'Énergie).
An energy system can be defined as an engine/fuel pairing which, when combined with a vehicle, results in both energy performance and pollutant emissions.
After a wide variety of fuels were used in the early days of transport development (oil, coal pulverization, electricity, gas...), oil rapidly became the sole source of energy, and has been for over a century. This is due to the formidable energy density (see figure 1 ), geographical availability and low manufacturing costs of petroleum-based fuels.
