Rail's market share of freight transport in France is 20.9% (source: SNCF; this figure excludes freight transport within 150 km). This market share is steadily eroding (figure 11).

Rail's market share in France is one of the highest in Europe: Deutsche Bahn in Germany has 17.9% of the market, FS in Italy and EWSR in the UK have 9.6%. Only ÖBB in Austria and CFF in Switzerland, due to their rail-friendly national policies, and Swedish Railways, due to their heavy traffic structure, have a higher market share.
