5. Calculating flat parts or wires
In the case of mechanical stresses, we identify whether they correspond to tension, compression or bending.
In the case of tension, we use the modulus of elasticity of the chosen material (at the working temperature) to calculate the cross-section, and then, by deduction, the dimensioning of the cross-section of this part perpendicular to the tension axis.
We use the so-called modulus of elasticity at the origin, i.e. the tangent to the material's deformation curve at the start of stress application, if no deformation is assumed. This is tangent T in the diagram below.
On the other hand, the modulus of elasticity at break will be used for the calculation, if we assume that the object can deform elastically, returning to its initial shape, after the stress has stopped. In this case, the tangent MM' will be used for...
