CCD stands for Charge-Coupled Device, and designates a type of electronic component used as the photographic sensor in our most common cameras (high-end cameras use CMOS sensors).

This device enables light rays (photons) to be transformed into pairs of electrons, and thus into an electrical signal. This signal is then processed by computers, software or other means to recreate an image that humans can interpret as such.

A CCD camera interprets digital information. It is equipped with one or more CCD sensors, and a device for processing the information received from the sensors.
