1. What is a nanocomposite?
The term nanocomposite describes a two-phase material whose reinforcing phase has a nano-sized dispersion. The matrix can be metallic, ceramic or polymeric; for the purposes of this dossier, only the last type will be considered. Generally speaking, nanocomposites are classified according to the form factor of the incorporated filler (ratio of length to thickness or diameter). Table 1 summarizes the characteristic dimensions of the main fillers used.
