4. Situation elements

4.1 Definition

A situation element is a geometric element such as a point [PT], straight line [SL] or plane [PL] defined in the nominal model, which will be associated with a surface or a reference system.

The situation element must be invariant to all residual degrees of freedom of the reference system.

For a very long time, these geometric elements have been widely used by designers, sometimes with a commentary for greater clarity. Formalized under the name of situation elements, they are not very detailed in standard 5459, which leaves a great deal of freedom in their use.
