A system is likely to evolve between normal and faulty operating modes.
A faulty operating mode is reached following the occurrence of a defect. Diagnosis can be defined as the operation used to detect a fault, locate its origin and, if necessary, determine its causes. A deviation from normal system behavior is the result of the occurrence of a fault. This deviation is a malfunction which does not prevent the system from fulfilling its function. On the other hand, this inability is the consequence of the occurrence of a fault.
A fault is therefore a behavioral anomaly that may foreshadow a future failure.
