1.1 The challenges of standardization

For many years now, it has been recognized that standardization should be conceived and used as a strategic tool for improving business productivity, and many contributions have already been made on this subject.

But the usual perception of standardization is too narrowly that of a technical activity relating to products (standardization, qualification and certification, implementation). As a result, product-related standards account for a significant proportion of the AFNOR catalog. By contrast, there are far fewer standards concerning corporate functions.
